Derry Mayor and Pope Mark Bishop McKeown's 25 Years as Bishop
A special service took place in St Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry yesterday to mark the 25th anniversary of Bishop Donal McKeown's Episcopal Ordination.
Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, attended the mass of thanksgiving. He recognised Bishop McKeown's work over decades for its dedication, compassion and kindness.
Mayor McHugh described Bishop McKeown as a fearless and passionate leader who stands up for those in need. He noted the bishop's wisdom and insight have made him a trusted mentor to many.
The mayor congratulated Bishop McKeown on the milestone and wished him health in his next phase of ministry.
A message from the Pope was read at the service. It congratulated Bishop McKeown on his long pastoral ministry and zealous labours over 25 years. The message bestowed an Apostolic Blessing on the bishop, his clergy, the laity and his family.
Bishop McKeown reflected in his homily on challenges faced by the Irish Church in the last half century. He noted a narrative that the church was over and that hard work was pointless.
He stated a secular consumerist agenda has led to fragmentation and meaninglessness. Bishop McKeown said young people are now inspired by stories of saints to seek more than short-term pleasures.
Attendees included friends and family of Bishop McKeown, Mayor McHugh and fellow clergy. Bishop Alan McGuckian of Down and Connor was present, along with Bishop Niall Coll of Raphoe, Bishop Philip Boyce, emeritus of Raphoe, and Bishop Ken Good, former Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe.
Rev. Nigel Cairns, Dean-Elect of Derry, represented the current Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Andrew Forster.
