BBC Drama Crookhaven Filmed at County Down Estate with Local Crew
A new BBC drama series titled Crookhaven was filmed over 17 weeks at an estate house and its grounds in County Down. The production transformed the site into a secret school for eight students known as Crooklings. These students compete for the Crooked Cup while facing an enemy called The Nameless.
The series features actor Dougray Scott as headmaster Caspian Lockett. Scott described the location as adding character to the production. He noted the Northern Ireland film industry is booming with strong crews.
Producer Leon McGeown-Fee, part of the local crew, stated the estate provided a magical setting for the heightened world of the story. She said the project brought top cast and crew to create something larger than anticipated.
Carmel Laniado plays Penelope Lockett, the headmaster's daughter and a Crookling. Laniado highlighted themes of friendship and trust in the characters' journeys.
The drama adapts the book series by JJ Arcanjo. It stars Scott and Julie Hesmondhalgh with young actors as the Crooklings. Students at the school learn crookery skills like skullduggery and disguise to promote justice.
Crookhaven airs as a double bill on Sunday at 15:05 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and at 17:25 on CBBC. The full series becomes available on BBC iPlayer that day.
