Derry Filmmaker Ronan Corrigan Bases Debut Feature in Northern Ireland
Ronan Corrigan, a filmmaker from Derry, created his debut feature film LifeHack during the Covid lockdown when commercial and music video shoots stopped. The film covers a teenage bitcoin heist and premiered at SXSW last year.
Corrigan lives in London after studying film and TV in York. He built experience through commercials and music videos. He noted fewer mid-level opportunities exist in Northern Ireland, where workers often join large productions at entry levels or higher roles go to those from abroad.
One of his ads from 2018 shows a taxi driver in Derry volunteering for a suicide prevention group. His 2018 documentary Soft Boy Forever examined Dublin's underground hip hop scene with Kean Kavanagh and Kojacque from Soft Boy Records. That work led to paid music videos for Warner Music, Universal, and Coldplay.
During Covid, Corrigan returned to Derry from London and lived with family while developing LifeHack in the screenlife style using computer screens. He pitched it through the BFI academy to Timur Bekmambetov.
The UK-shot project included Northern Ireland actor Jessica Reynolds, Donegal costumes designer Sad Sac, and cinematographer Ciaron Craig. Corrigan plans his next horror feature in Ireland with Derry and Donegal locations.
