Gregory Campbell, DUP MP for East Londonderry, tabled a motion in the House of Commons to mark European Remembrance Day for Victims of Terrorism. The motion appears on the Order Paper today.

The day occurs each year on 11 March. The date commemorates the 2004 Madrid train bombings that killed 193 people and injured thousands.

Campbell's motion recognises innocent victims of terrorism in the United Kingdom and Europe. It stresses the need to remember their suffering.

Campbell stated that families across Europe have had their lives devastated by terrorism. He called for remembrance of those innocent victims and for keeping their stories in memory.

He emphasised maintaining a distinction between innocent victims of terrorism and the perpetrators. Campbell noted that perpetrators sometimes try to present themselves as victims.

The MP said the day offers a chance to consider the human cost of terrorism and to support those living with its effects.

Campbell welcomed the lighting of public buildings to mark the day. He described these actions as a visible show of support for victims and families.
