Events Mark European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism in Northern Ireland
An event at Stormont on Monday will feature victims of republican, loyalist and Islamist terrorism sharing their experiences. Speakers include Travis Dylan Frain, injured in the 2017 Westminster Bridge attack, John Sproule, whose brother Ian died from an IRA shooting in 1991 near Castlederg in Co Tyrone, Denise Mullen, whose father Denis Mullen was killed by the UVF in Moy, Co Tyrone in 1975, and Pastor Stephen Thompson, whose aunt Yvonne Dunlop died in a 1976 Ballymena bomb.
Geraldine Ferguson, mother of Sapper Patrick Azimkar killed by dissident republicans outside Massereene Barracks in Co Antrim in 2009, and Simon Utley, survivor of the 1982 Hyde Park bombing, will speak at a Westminster event on Wednesday.
Buildings such as the Island Arts Centre in Lisburn and St Columb’s Cathedral in Londonderry will be illuminated red on Wednesday for the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism.
Kenny Donaldson, director of victims' group SEFF, organised the events with sponsorship from TUV MLA Timothy Gaston and Lord Tom Elliott. Donaldson called the lighting a symbolic show of support for victims and survivors.
He noted the UK now observes a National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism on 21 August, matching the international date. SEFF held an event for that date last August with victims from various countries.
Donaldson stated governments need to enact policy changes covering health, welfare, justice, truth, compensation and other support for victims.
TUV MLA Timothy Gaston said his party has held annual victims' events at Stormont since 2004. The Monday event includes a minute's silence.
