Youth Group Premieres Films on Violence Against Women at Newry Event
Members of Three Ways Youth Project premiered three short films at Newry Omniplex. The films address violence against women and girls. The event included young people, statutory partners, community organisations, and local representatives.
The project followed discussions among the group on relationships, consent, coercive control, and gender roles. Participants noted a lack of structured education on domestic violence and bystander responsibility.
Young people worked through weekly workshops with domestic violence professionals and support services. The films cover emotional, psychological, and social effects of violence against women and girls.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson Councillor Philip Campbell attended the premiere. He called violence against women and girls a real challenge in local communities. Campbell stated young people from the project drove the effort to challenge harmful attitudes.
Padraig Harte of Three Ways Community Association leads the youth project with Amy Fearon and Bernadette Hollywood. Harte said the project started after young people raised concerns about harmful attitudes toward consent, control, and relationships. He noted work included research, script writing, workshops, and revisions.
The films will support an educational resource pack for schools, youth clubs, and community organisations. Topics include healthy relationships, consent, equality, and bystander intervention.
Support came from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, The Executive Office, the Department for Communities, and the Education Authority Youth Engagement.
