NWRC film students produce shorts for PEACEPLUS projects
Six short films were produced by film students at North West Regional College as part of a collaboration with Derry City and Strabane District Council.
The project involved six community initiatives supported through PEACEPLUS funding. Students worked directly with the groups to handle filming and production.
Deputy Mayor Alderman Niree McMorris said the collaboration showed how communities and students can work together to benefit from local voices and skills. She said ensuring young adults have opportunities to showcase their talent and perspectives is a positive sign of active citizenship.
PEACE Manager Sue Divin said the idea came from the council's work to give young people a voice. She said six projects received support from media students who gained practical experience for their qualifications.
NWRC students said the work gave a voice to underrepresented groups and required sensitive approaches for some topics, including domestic violence. They said working with community groups helped them meet client expectations and learn about different backgrounds.
Media lecturer Michael Timoney said the collaboration gave students a real-world brief and the chance to apply their skills in a meaningful way.
Principal Lecturer Francine Moran said the project showed the value of partnership working in creating opportunities for students while supporting wider community work.
