District Council Play Educates 1,000 Students on Relationship Control and Violence
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council showed a play called The Voice Within to more than 1,000 post-primary school students in the district. Spanner in the Works Theatre Company wrote and directed the production. It covers control and violence in teenage relationships plus the role of communication and respect.
Each performance came with an interactive workshop on signs of coercive behaviour that leads to violence and abuse against women and girls. The council arranged the events across its seven District Electoral Areas. The Executive Office Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Momentum Funding supported the initiative.
The campaign ended with a performance at Newry Town Hall on 24 February. Council Chairperson Councillor Philip Campbell attended the event.
Councillor Campbell said the play helps young people grasp behaviours that result in control and violence in relationships. He stated that coercive behaviour has no place in society and that women and girls must feel safe at all times.
The chairperson noted the council's resolve to tackle violence against women and girls. He said the play spotlights silenced experiences, educates youth and encourages them to help end such violence.
