Newcastle Sweet Shop Marks 75 Years Under Family Ownership
A sweet shop in Newcastle has reached its 75th anniversary. The Bon-Bon opened on 1 March 1951 when Christina Lynch started the business. Her grandchildren Michael Lynch and Fiona Dagidir now run it.
The shop sells ice-creams, lollies, souvenirs, buckets, spades and seasonal items. It sits in Newcastle and attracts locals along with day-trippers and holidaymakers.
Christina Lynch opened The Bon-Bon after success with The Tip Top nearby. She and her sister May Rafferty launched The Tip Top in 1935.
In the late 1970s, son Harvey and his wife Ann took over The Bon-Bon. Siblings Fiona, Michael, Grainne and Kevin assisted during their school years.
Michael Lynch said he and his siblings restocked shelves and tidied after homework. Fiona Dagidir noted they priced stock from a young age and made memories and friends there.
Fiona Dagidir called her grandmother a hard worker. Michael Lynch said the family owes much to her.
Michael Lynch and Fiona Dagidir credit customer support for the shop's success. They call it proudly Newcastle.
