King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the Warehouse Community Centre in Newtownards, County Down, as part of a three-day tour of Northern Ireland.

The King joined kitchen staff to mix ingredients for a gluten-free chocolate sponge cake. Head chef Dawn Stewart said she was very impressed by his mixing.

During the serving, the plate under the cake shifted and the slice nearly fell from the knife. Both the King and Queen laughed at the mishap.

A bystander suggested the slice would be better eaten on crackers. The King replied that the person should have it for lunch and added that the sprinkle-covered cake looked very good.

The Warehouse Open Centre, founded in 2009, runs the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme for people aged 14 to 25 in the Ards and North Down area. It redistributes surplus supermarket food as free groceries, hot lunches and ready meals.

Earlier in the visit the royal couple met organisers of the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann festival at Thompson Dock in Belfast, toured Titanic Distillers, and viewed digital skills programmes at W5 LIFE. Queen Camilla also visited Fane Street Primary School. The First Minister and deputy First Minister were received at Hillsborough Castle.
