Lidl will open its first pub in Northern Ireland next month at its existing store in Dundonald, County Down.

The venue, named The Middle Ale, will occupy a 60 square metre space with seating for up to 60 people and separate entrances from the supermarket.

The project includes more than £500,000 in investment and will create eight permanent positions, including a bar manager, bar duty manager, bar attendants and off-sales attendants.

The 27 existing staff at the Dundonald store will remain in place.

Lidl Northern Ireland Regional Managing Director Gordon Cruikshanks said the pub will stock the retailer's range of beers, wines and spirits along with bar snacks.

The interior was designed by Gordon Devenney of O'Donnell O'Neill in collaboration with construction partners MMG Contracts and Marcon.

The Middle Ale will operate independently of the adjoining Lidl supermarket.
