Derry City and Strabane Council has started a scheme inviting dog owners to sign the Green Dog Walker’s Pledge. Participants commit to removing pet waste and sharing bags with others. Signers receive a specialised lead, key ring and waste bags.

The council renewed its anti-fouling drive with more patrols by enforcement officers in problem zones. Fixed penalty notices of £100 apply to offenders.

Mayor Councillor Ruairí McHugh noted resident complaints about fouling in walkways and parks caused by some owners. Principal Environmental Health Officer Enda Cummins highlighted waste risks from bacteria and parasites, especially to children, elderly and those with weak immunity.

Cummins called on owners to carry bags, dispose of waste properly and report incidents. The council stressed fouling harms public health and spaces.
