Derry City and Strabane Council Renews Call to Combat Fly-Tipping
Derry City and Strabane District Council has renewed its appeal for residents to recognize the effects of fly-tipping and littering in the area.
Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, stated that fly-tipping harms the environment, reduces community pride, and requires substantial public funds for cleanup. He called on people to manage their waste responsibly, donate usable items to charities or reuse centres, utilize council bin collections and recycling services, and report observed incidents.
Head of Environment and Building Control, Conor Canning, said the council maintains a zero-tolerance policy on fly-tipping. The Waste Enforcement Team examines all reports to identify and prosecute offenders. Fixed Penalty Notices issue when evidence exists, and serious cases advance to court. Fly-tipping qualifies as a criminal offence.
The council provides various waste services, including free yearly bulky waste collection, weekly bin services, and recycling centres. The 4Rs New 2 You Reuse Centre at Pennyburn accepts large furniture. Repair & Share Foyle takes small broken electrical items for repair or recycling.
Residents can report fly-tipping online at www.derrystrabane.com/recycling or by phone at 02871 253253.
