Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has introduced private enforcement officers to address dog fouling and littering.

The officers began patrolling at the start of May under a one-year contract with 3GS UK Limited.

Seven enforcement workers operate seven days a week alongside existing environment wardens. They wear uniforms fitted with cameras and can issue fines of up to £200.

Between January 2025 and April 2026 the council issued three fixed penalty notices for dog fouling and 15 fines for litter.

Mayor Oliver McMullan said the scheme sends a clear message that the council is serious about tackling these issues. He added that dog fouling generates one of the biggest complaints from ratepayers.

The council is not paying for the service directly. It retains an agreed share of fine income while the company keeps a commercially sensitive portion.

The officers focus on hotspots and operate at varied times including early mornings and evenings. Similar private enforcement arrangements have operated in other Northern Ireland councils in the past, though this is the only current scheme.
