Two Derry teenagers killed in cross-border road crash
Two 18-year-old passengers from Shantallow in Londonderry, Daniel Cullen and Caoimhin Porter-McLoone, died following a collision between a car and a lorry in St Johnston, Donegal, on Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 22:45-23:45, eight miles from Derry. A third 18-year-old, the driver, sustained serious injuries and is being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
Gardaí were alerted at approximately 23:15. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the second died later at Altnagelvin Hospital. The three were reportedly returning from a trip to Asda in Strabane. An appeal has been issued for witnesses or dash-cam footage from the area between 22:45 and 23:45 to contact Letterkenny Garda Station.
The Shantallow community has expressed shock following the deaths. Grief counsellor Debbie Mullan, from Road Victim Support Northern Ireland-Donegal, whose own son died in a crash 13 years ago, described the area as in a state of numbness and disbelief. Counsellors visited Shantallow community centre to support locals.
Tributes came from St Brigid’s College in Derry, former school of both victims, which remembered them as bringing 'warmth, laughter and joy'. Caoimhin’s primary school, St Thérèse’s in Lenamore, recalled him as kind and sporty. Daniel’s employer, H&A, noted him as a valued colleague. Bishop of Derry Dr Donal McKeown offered sympathy to the families and acknowledged the impact on emergency services and priests.
Prayers were held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Shantallow. Funerals are scheduled for Caoimhin Porter-McLoone on Saturday at St Brigid’s Church, Carnhill, and Daniel Cullen on Sunday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Steelstown. Road death statistics for the island of Ireland this year stand at 40, with 15 in Northern Ireland and 25 in the Republic.
