Protesters blocked Craigavon Bridge in Derry on Sunday afternoon in support of residents on the Garvaghy Road in Portadown.

Dozens gathered at the Carlisle Circus end of the bridge, unfurling banners stating “end sectarian parades” and “Derry supports Garvaghy Road”.

Members of local Sinn Féin cumainn were present. The party’s Derry branch said on social media: “Solidarity from Derry to the residents of the Garvaghy Road. No going back.”

The demonstration came as a standoff continued in Portadown over a planned Orange Order parade along the Garvaghy Road.

Garvaghy Road residents have opposed the parade, which they say passes through their nationalist area without consent.

Road traffic was disrupted during the protest, with the bridge temporarily closed to vehicles.
