Petrol bombs were thrown at police vehicles in the Top of the Hill and Irish Street interface area of Derry on Saturday evening. Video footage posted online shows youths emerging from the Mountain View area and throwing makeshift incendiary devices at police Land Rovers near the Waterside Shared Village.

On Sunday, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that a fire had been set on the road at the junction of Chapel Road, Strabane Old Road, and Irish Street. The road was rendered impassable as a result of the blaze.

The PSNI did not report any injuries or arrests in connection with the incident by the time of their statement on Sunday. The Waterside Shared Village is a community facility located in the Waterside area of Derry, near the interface between predominantly unionist and nationalist communities.

Interface areas in Northern Ireland have historically been flashpoints for sporadic violence, often involving youths and attacks on police. The PSNI has previously highlighted the dangers posed to both officers and residents by such attacks during the summer months.

Police have not released further details about the incident, including the number of devices thrown or the extent of damage to vehicles. The road has since been cleared and reopened to traffic.
