Royal Black Institution parades set for Scarva and Bangor
Thousands of members of the Royal Black Institution will gather today for parades in Scarva and Bangor. Forecast temperatures of 23C are expected to bring warm, dry conditions.
The main event is the Sham Fight at Scarva, a reenactment of the Battle of the Boyne that draws crowds of more than 100,000 people. Around 5,000 participants and 75 bands, including flute, accordion, pipe and silver, will take part.
John Adair will play King William, with Colin Cairns as King James. Adair said he expected a tough fight but no major upset.
Rev William Anderson, the institution’s sovereign grand master, described the occasion as a family event. He advised attendees to bring sunscreen, hats and water, given the warm weather.
The Bangor parade will involve members from Lurgan and Bangor districts. Rev Anderson said both events allow the institution to declare its commitment to the Reformed Christian faith.
Mezzo-soprano Emma Brown returns to perform at Scarva, having previously appeared in 2018 and 2019. She will be accompanied by her three-year-old son.
The parade leaves the assembly field at 10.45am, the Sham Fight begins at 1.15pm, a religious service follows at 2.15pm, and the return parade is scheduled for 3.15pm.
