The case of a man charged with a knife attack in north Belfast that left the victim blinded in one eye has been sent to the Crown Court.

Hadi Alodid, 30, of Duncairn Avenue, appeared via video link from Maghaberry Prison at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. He faces charges of attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon, threatening to kill an NHS radiographer, and threatening and abusive behaviour.

The victim, Stephen Ogilvie, who is in his forties, lost his left eye and sustained damage to his right eye during the incident in early June. He also suffered deep cuts to his head, face and back.

Prosecutors told the court that outstanding evidence includes medical records, mobile phone data and witness statements. A request to adjourn the case for four weeks pending the gathering of this material was granted.

The district judge advised Alodid, who was assisted by an Arabic interpreter, that the charges are serious and he should obtain legal representation. When asked if he wished to say anything, the defendant remained silent.

Alodid was remanded in custody until August 5. A date for the Crown Court hearing is expected to be fixed at the next listing.

The incident led to disorder in several areas of Northern Ireland. Police have said Alodid may originally be from Chad, not Sudan as previously believed.
