Household waste dumped in Upper Ballycolman, Strabane, included a significant quantity of antidepressant tablets, raising public safety concerns. The black bags were left near a local nursery between Thursday evening and Saturday morning. Several split open, scattering rubbish into nearby gardens.

Ivan Barr of Melmount Community Forum said the dumping was wholly unacceptable and disrespectful to residents and volunteers. He pointed out that alternatives such as council bulky waste collections or asking neighbours for help were available. Mr Barr searched the waste but could not identify who left it. He asked that anyone recognising distinctive cushions among the dumped items encourage the person responsible to come forward.

A spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council said fly-tipping is dealt with under a zero-tolerance policy. Every reported incident is investigated by the Waste Enforcement Team, and offenders can receive a Fixed Penalty Notice or face prosecution. The council reminded residents that free bulky waste collections and other disposal services are available.
