Comber Runner Dedicates 10k Victory to Late Grandparents
A Comber woman has won the annual Comber 10k road race, securing victory after several top-three finishes in previous years.
Katie Moore, 30, completed the course on Friday in 36 minutes, equalling her personal best time. It was her first win in the event, which she had entered for a decade.
Her grandparents, Irene and John Devlin, also from Comber, both died shortly before the race. Her grandmother passed away in January following a cancer diagnosis, and her grandfather died from a short illness just days before the event.
Ms Moore had left her job to provide full-time palliative care for her grandmother during her final months. She said she had promised her grandmother she would one day win the race for her.
After her grandfather's death, she spent two nights at the Ulster Hospital's intensive care unit before he passed away on the Sunday prior to the race. Despite the loss, she decided to compete.
After crossing the line first, Ms Moore visited her grandparents' grave and placed her gold medal there as a tribute.
