Derry College Launches Ireland's First Panel Wiring Apprenticeship
North West Regional College in Derry has started a new apprenticeship in panel wiring, which it says is the first programme of its kind in Ireland.
The course was designed to meet growing demand for specialist engineering skills in the region. Apprentices will train at the college's Springtown campus with employer Vertiv and at the Limavady campus with TES Power.
Applications for the Vertiv-based places are now open, while TES Power has already filled its intake for this year, indicating strong employer interest.
John Cartin, NWRC's Head of Faculty for Engineering, Construction and Sustainability, explained that the programme will equip apprentices with the skills needed to assemble, wire, test and commission low-voltage electrical switchgear and control panels.
He said the apprenticeship blends off-the-job training at college with practical workplace learning, giving students both theoretical knowledge and industry competence.
The college added that the qualification offers clear progression to Level 3, higher apprenticeships and degree-level engineering courses, supporting long-term career development.
