A new digital prospectus has been launched to guide learners across Northern Ireland through the full range of traineeship opportunities offered by the region’s six further education colleges. The resource compiles information on 36 different pathways, detailing entry requirements and progression options for prospective students.

Janis Scallon, Director of Further Education with the Department for the Economy, described the prospectus as a significant milestone in the rollout of traineeships, which are a flagship Level 2 vocational offering. She noted that it is the result of collaboration across the sector and provides a helpful single point of reference for learners, parents, teachers and employers. She urged anyone considering a traineeship to review the prospectus and contact their local college.

Traineeships combine professional and technical qualifications with work placements, essential skills development in literacy and numeracy, and sector-specific training. They are designed to lead to employment, apprenticeships or further study.

Celine McCartan, Chairperson of the Further Education Principals Group, said the prospectus makes it easier for learners and their families to find the option that best matches each individual’s interests and career goals. She highlighted that traineeships offer pathways into apprenticeships and higher-level study while equipping learners with practical experience and recognised qualifications.

The prospectus, available on the websites of all six colleges, includes a dedicated section for parents of young people considering the route. Its launch reflects a collective effort to raise the profile of vocational education and to address skills needs across key economic sectors.
