A teenager has been fined and banned from driving after a high-speed police chase in Dungannon was abandoned because of the risk to the public.

Daniels Minkevics, 18, of Millview Manor in Dungannon, pleaded guilty to six driving-related offences dating from 13-14 August last year.

Dungannon Magistrates Court heard that police were investigating a black Audi car when it sped away from the Oaks Centre car park. It travelled along Oaks Road towards the Coalisland Road, reaching speeds of 110 miles per hour.

Officers called off the pursuit due to the danger posed to other road users. Minkevics later left the vehicle and fled on foot, but a passenger in the car identified him.

The vehicle was found to be uninsured and driven without a licence. The registration plates belonged to a Renault van, constituting fraudulent use of a vehicle registration mark.

Minkevics denied being the driver during police interview but admitted purchasing the car on Facebook Marketplace three months earlier. The court heard the vehicle will be crushed because no registered owner could be traced.

A defence solicitor said the defendant was born in Lithuania and moved to Northern Ireland when he was six. He is now employed at a local factory.

District Judge Francis Rafferty imposed fines totalling £825 plus a £15 offender levy. Minkevics was disqualified from driving for 18 months and given 20 weeks to pay.
