Unionists Welcome Cross-Border Cash but Pledge Scrutiny
The Republic of Ireland’s Shared Island fund has allocated €377 million (£325 million) to cross-border infrastructure projects, including upgrades to the Belfast to Dublin railway line.
Belfast unionist politicians have responded by welcoming the investment while stressing the need for caution. DUP MLA Gareth Wilson and UUP MLA Steve Aiken both expressed support for the funding. Wilson added, however, that unionists will remain watchful to ensure the money is not used to advance constitutional objectives rather than deliver practical benefits.
The Shared Island fund was established by the Irish government to foster north-south co-operation. The UK has long provided Northern Ireland with substantial financial support; the region receives higher per capita funding than almost any other part of the United Kingdom.
The new allocation is intended to improve transport links and other shared facilities across the border.
