Northern Ireland Gains £390m in Extra Funding from Spring Estimates
The Chancellor's Spring Estimates allocate an additional £390 million in Barnett consequentials to Northern Ireland. This funding adds to a £400 million rollover, bringing the total extra amount to three-quarters of a billion pounds beyond the existing £19.8 billion allocation.
Dr Steve Aiken OBE MLA, finance spokesperson for the Ulster Unionist Party, stated that this influx gives the Northern Ireland Executive resources to sustain public services and projects. He noted that the Fiscal Council has identified inefficiencies in how Northern Ireland spends its budget.
Aiken pointed to the Department of Infrastructure as an example of mismanagement. He described ongoing issues there as creating financial shortfalls that primarily benefit barristers through legal costs.
The spokesperson emphasized the need for reforms to ensure public money supports services and infrastructure effectively. He welcomed the funding as part of Northern Ireland's position within the United Kingdom but urged better allocation practices.
