CAFRE Engineering Students Tour McCauley Trailers in Toomebridge
Land-based engineering students from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) have visited McCauley Trailers in Toomebridge to observe modern manufacturing processes.
The visit allowed Level 3 students to track the production of a trailer from initial customer enquiry through to final assembly. They followed the conversion of design specifications into fabricated steel components and then into sub-assemblies and finished products.
On the production floor, students watched a robotic welding system in operation. The demonstration showed how automation is used to improve consistency and durability in high-volume manufacturing.
In the finishing bays, they saw the installation of Electronic Control Units, lighting, and power systems, as well as the fitting of wheels and tyres. The students were also introduced to air brake and hydraulic brake systems and their role in heavy machinery safety.
McCauley Trailers director Caitriona Gribben gave a presentation on the company's growth and the range of career paths available, including roles in engineering, design, production, and technical support.
CAFRE currently offers a Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land-based Engineering. The visit demonstrated how classroom learning applies to local manufacturing careers.
