Derry City and Strabane District Council is expanding healthier nutritional standards for vending machines across its public venues. The decision follows a pilot at Foyle Arena that cut average calories per unit sold by 26% and sugar by 35%.

The 2025 pilot at the leisure centre introduced calorie limits on snacks such as crisps, chocolate and sweets, and reduced the number of sugary drinks on offer. The overall product range did not change significantly, but the selection is now healthier. A survey of users found 93% were satisfied with the revised vending machine options.

The initiative forms part of the Department of Health’s Obesity Prevention Strategy, Healthy Futures. The Food Standards Agency worked with local councils to extend nutritional standards, already in place in Health and Social Care facilities, to vending services in all public spaces.

The council said the pilot scheme will remain in place while further enhancements are explored.
