Construction has begun on a £7m public realm scheme in Strabane town centre, the Department for Communities has announced. The project aims to improve the quality, accessibility and appearance of key streets and public spaces.

The scheme is backed by over £6m of departmental funding and will be delivered by Derry City and Strabane District Council. Works will cover Railway Street, Derry Road, Castle Street, Abercorn Square, Market Street and Upper Main Street.

Planned improvements include upgraded footpaths and carriageways, new street lighting and furniture, tree planting and public artwork. Junction modifications are intended to improve traffic flow, while a new public space at Abercorn Square and better on-street parking and service areas will support longer-term regeneration.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said the investment would help revitalise the town centre, boost its appeal and support local businesses. He described it as an important precursor to a planned £115m City Deal investment in Strabane that will drive wider regeneration.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Grace Uí Niallais, welcomed the start of works and said she looked forward to seeing how the project would transform the area for residents, businesses and visitors.
