Work begins on £7m Strabane town centre regeneration
Construction has started on a £7 million public realm project in Strabane town centre. The scheme will upgrade footpaths, carriageways, street lighting and furniture, and introduce tree planting and public art.
The Department for Communities has provided over £6 million of the funding. Minister Gordon Lyons visited the town and said the investment would make the centre more attractive and accessible for residents, businesses and visitors. He stated that the works would strengthen the town’s appeal and support further economic growth.
Lyons added that the project is an important step ahead of a planned £115 million City Deal investment for Strabane, which is expected to support wider regeneration.
Derry City and Strabane District Council is leading delivery. The improvements will cover Railway Street, Derry Road, Castle Street, Abercorn Square, Market Street and Upper Main Street. Plans include junction upgrades to improve traffic flow, a new public space at Abercorn Square, and better on-street parking and service areas.
Mayor Cllr Grace Uí Niallais welcomed the start of work and thanked all partners involved. She described the project as the beginning of an exciting period for the town.
The scheme forms part of ongoing efforts to revitalise the town centre and attract further investment.
