Racially motivated attacks in Belfast force 27 ethnic minority residents, including children, to flee their homes
A series of racially motivated attacks in Belfast over two nights forced 27 ethnic minority residents, including children, to flee their homes. The violence erupted on Tuesday and Wednesday, following a knife attack in the north of the city on Monday night. A Sudanese man was subsequently charged in connection with that initial incident.
Video footage of the stabbing was circulated rapidly on social media. The clip was shared by billionaire Elon Musk on the platform X after being posted by British MP Rupert Lowe. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, publicly demanded details of the attacker's identity and immigration status before an arrest had been made.
During the subsequent attacks, buses and police cars were set on fire. Observers noted the presence of individuals with known paramilitary affiliations at the scenes.
Political figures from across Northern Ireland’s unionist and nationalist divide issued condemnations of the violence.
The events have intensified discussion about asylum pressures in the region. The Common Travel Area allows free movement between Ireland and the UK, and a significant proportion of international protection applications lodged in Dublin involve individuals who arrived via Northern Ireland. This has led to calls for both governments to better manage cross-border flows.
