Cyclists to attempt 24-hour 'Everesting' challenge for Omagh cancer charity
Eight cyclists from Omagh and the surrounding area will attempt a 24-hour 'Everesting' challenge next month to raise money for the local charity Care for Cancer.
The group plans to complete 91 ascents of a one-mile climb in the Gortin Glens, starting at 6pm on Friday 19 June. The repeated climbs will accumulate nearly 30,000 feet of elevation, equivalent to the height of Mount Everest.
The riders are Noel O'Hanlon, Roger Harkness, Chris Carlin, PJ Shields, Danny Whyte, Sean Donnelly, Barry Donnelly and Enda Harpur. Harpur said the team is experienced in endurance cycling events and has previously raised funds for Care for Cancer and other local charities.
Around 50 family members and friends will volunteer to support the challenge. Richard Beattie of the Glenpark Estate has offered use of the premises as a base camp for the duration.
The cyclists aim to finish by 6pm on Saturday 20 June at the Glenpark Estate. After completing the ride, they will submit their data to an online cycling hall of fame to officially record the achievement.
Donations to Care for Cancer can be made through the team's fundraising page.
