Police Warn Against Scrambler Use in Strabane Cemetery
Police have issued a warning following reports of scrambler bikes being ridden through Strabane Cemetery in recent days. A separate incident on the Ivan Barr footbridge involved a woman pushing a pram who narrowly avoided being struck by a rider.
Sinn Féin councillor Brian Harte described the cemetery activity as hugely disrespectful. He said that while scrambler owners need suitable places to use their vehicles, riding through a burial ground is not acceptable. He noted there is a field beside the cemetery where riders sometimes gather, and that could be acceptable with permission, but racing through the cemetery disturbs a place of solitude and reflection.
Mr Harte also expressed deep concern about the footbridge incident. He said a young mother pushing a pram almost collided with a scrambler on the Ivan Barr bridge. He contacted the PSNI, who said officers would continue to monitor the situation.
PSNI Neighbourhood Inspector McDermott said police are working with partner agencies to ensure community safety and will take action against those using scramblers irresponsibly. He stated that riding scramblers or e-scooters on public roads without a driving licence and insurance is unacceptable and poses a risk to the community.
Inspector McDermott appealed for anyone with concerns to report them to their local Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.
Mr Harte added that no one objects to scramblers being used respectfully and properly, but when safety is jeopardised, that behaviour should be stopped.
