Police have issued a public warning that stealing or damaging water rescue equipment along waterways in Strabane and surrounding areas is putting lives in danger.

Sergeant Johnston of the Strabane Neighbourhood Policing Team said throw lines, lifebuoys, and signage are placed at strategic points on waterways for one purpose only: to save lives in an emergency. He stressed that a throw line could be the difference between life and death for someone in difficulty.

The appeal was made jointly with the Community Rescue Service and the Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership.

Ivan Barr, Western District Commander of the Community Rescue Service, described the theft and destruction of equipment along the Strabane canal and other local waterways as completely unacceptable. He said such acts are not harmless vandalism but direct attacks on community safety. He warned that a person could be denied a chance of survival if emergency equipment is unavailable when needed.

Alderman Darren Guy, chair of the PCSP, said replacing damaged equipment comes at a cost that could be better spent elsewhere. He urged the public to treat the equipment with respect and report any interference to police.

Police said anyone witnessing damage or theft should call 101, or 999 in an emergency. Reports can also be made online via the PSNI website.
