A County Down charity shop was damaged on Tuesday night when a burning car rolled into its building during anti-immigration protests in Kilkeel.

The New Beginnings shop, which raises funds for abandoned and disabled children in Uganda, was able to reopen on Thursday morning, volunteer Jennifer Annett said.

Footage shared online shows a car on fire at the top of a hill before it careered down and struck the building, which also houses a Chinese takeaway.

Ms Annett said she does not believe the shop was deliberately targeted. She had been at a charity meeting nearby and saw smoke rising from the direction of the shop.

She thinks the car was abandoned and rolled downhill accidentally. The front of the premises now needs two new windows, a window frame, shutters, and replacement signage. Insurance may cover the cost.

The local community reacted with disgust, she said, describing the shop as very popular with regular customers.

On Wednesday night, a separate anti-immigration march took place in Coleraine. The group Our Northern Ireland Voice said between 200 and 300 people took part in a protest from Cromore Court into the town centre. The group later announced online that it planned to take a short break from activity.
