Chat Tea Train from Derry to Portrush for over-60s during Loneliness Awareness Week
An initiative offering a train trip from Londonderry to Portrush for people aged 60 and over aims to address loneliness and foster community connections.
The Chat Tea Train will depart the North West Transport Hub at 10.38am during Loneliness Awareness Week, which runs from June 15 to June 21, 2026. Participants must register with their GP practice social work team by June 12, 2026, and hold a valid travel pass.
Travellers are asked to arrive by 9.30am on the day to receive their tickets and join pre-departure entertainment. The journey involves a change at Coleraine, where a short walk to the connecting train may not suit those with mobility difficulties.
Carers can attend if a traveller requires support, as staff cannot provide one-to-one assistance due to the number of people taking part.
In Portrush, passengers will have free time to get refreshments, eat, or shop. They are asked to return to the station by 2pm ahead of the return journey, which arrives back in Derry at 3.22pm.
Free parking is available at the train station with a retained ticket, but spaces are limited and car-sharing or alternative transport is encouraged.
Organisers said the event provides an opportunity for people to build relationships, reminisce about train travel to the seaside, and experience joy and friendship.
