Education Minister launches inclusive play programme for SEN pupils
Education Minister Paul Givan has officially launched an inclusive play programme at Stepping Stones Playgroup in Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Belfast, as part of the Special Educational Needs Reform Delivery Plan.
The programme is delivered in partnership with PlayBoard NI and funded by the Public Sector Transformation Fund. It will be rolled out across 48 settings over three academic years, with the first group of schools beginning the eight-week programme in May 2026.
Play therapists provide specialist input to help improve children’s social, emotional, behavioural and cognitive development through play. The minister stated that growing evidence shows play is essential for children’s development, particularly for those with SEN. Embedding inclusive play into daily school life supports diverse pupil needs, strengthens relationships, improves engagement and enhances learning outcomes.
The programme also provides training for teaching and non-teaching staff, parents and carers. The minister said it will equip them with the knowledge, tools and support needed to deliver high-quality inclusive play, allowing every child to develop, participate and thrive.
Edwina Weiniger, chair of the Stepping Stones committee, said the school was pleased to be among the first to take part. The programme offers children hands-on play experiences and aligns with the nursery’s Forest School ambitions, building a lasting legacy of inclusive play in north Belfast.
