Alliance appeal for calm as Parades Commission approves Scarva protests
The Parades Commission has approved a Palestine solidarity march and a counter-protest in Scarva this Saturday, with conditions imposed on both events. The march will follow the canal towpath near the village.
Alliance Party representatives Andrew McMurray MLA and Councillor Joy Ferguson have appealed for calm ahead of the demonstrations.
McMurray stated that the commission’s determination must be respected. He acknowledged the right to protest but stressed that participants on all sides must adhere to the conditions set out, show consideration for the local community, and cooperate fully with the PSNI.
He called for cool heads and responsible leadership, adding that if everyone complies with the determination, there is no reason the day cannot pass peacefully.
Ferguson said political representatives have a particular duty to approach the issue maturely and avoid language that could inflame tensions. She noted that Scarva residents want to avoid a repeat of disorder that occurred last year.
After liaising directly with police, she urged all sides to abide by the determination’s conditions and engage respectfully.
