Mackle's Ice Cream and Tobacconist on Thomas Street in Portadown has been placed on the market. Hannaths Estate Agent is handling the sale of the business as a going concern, including fixtures, fittings, stock and the property.

The shop first opened in the early 1930s. It was later purchased by Brendan and Eileen Mackle, who gave it their name and introduced the ice cream recipe still in use. In 1991, Bernadette and Bosco Shannon bought the business. Their children, Kerry Kane and Richard Shannon, now run it.

Kerry Kane said the family made few changes to the business over the decades. The original display cabinets remain, though a lottery terminal and card payment machine have been added.

The shop sells traditional sweets from jars, hand-rolling tobacco, cigars, smoking pipes, and its signature ice cream. Tobacco is supplied by the firm Gawith Hoggarth.

Kane described a cross-generational customer base. She recalled instances of people visiting as children who now bring their own grandchildren. She expressed a desire for another family to take over and continue the tradition.

The building includes a 520-square-foot front shop, additional rear rooms, a kitchen, and separate residential accommodation over three floors with four bedrooms and two bathrooms.
