Benburb Priory has received two grants to carry out upgrades at its Tyrone site.

The Department for Communities and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs awarded £40,000 through the NI Community Infrastructure Fund. The money will be used to modernise the electrical wiring in the 19th century manor house.

A separate £7,000 grant from the LCF Trust will support work on the estate's public walkways and visitor signage.

The Priory operates from a former plantation estate. Its grounds include walking routes with mature trees and local wildlife, and the site contains the conserved O'Neill Castle built in the early 17th century.

The manor house and stables, constructed in the 1800s, contain the Priory Library and Museum. The museum holds collections relating to the Servite Order, the O'Neill family, and local Ulster history.

Professor Gerry McKenna, chair of the Priory Management Board, said the funding reflects the organisation's reputation, the work of its staff and volunteers, and its strategic planning.

He said the site functions as a heritage centre that supports spiritual, cultural and community activities.
