Alderman Sandra Hunter raised concerns at Causeway Coast and Glen’s Council’s Leisure and Development Committee about the management of the Dark Hedges.

She asked what actions are being taken to manage risk from one imbalanced mature beech tree while preserving the heritage asset.

Hunter also asked what measures exist or are planned to protect pedestrians and visitors from falling limbs given increased footfall along Bregagh Road.

The motion sought details on support for care and maintenance of newly planted saplings to ensure the long-term future of the avenue.

Hunter questioned provisions for managing visitor numbers, traffic and site protection during the busy tourist season, and asked about joint actions with the Department for Infrastructure on road closures, enforcement and access control.

She further asked how the council is working with landowners and agencies to balance conservation, tourism and public access.

Director of Leisure and Development Pat Mulvenna said she could not answer because no management forum representatives were present. She noted the Heritage Trust is undergoing a leadership change and said a report responding to the motion would be brought to the June meeting.
