Councillor Seeks Review of Halted Ronán's Way Redevelopment in Causeway Coast
An independent councillor in Causeway Coast and Glens has requested a council review of the decision to halt funding for the Ronán's Way redevelopment project.
Councillor Margaret Anne McKillop raised the issue at the April full council meeting. She noted the landowner had expected a lease agreement with the council to enable the £225,100 project to move forward.
The Leisure and Development Committee approved PEACEPLUS funding in March for related projects. This included £506,388 for Layde Path work such as vegetation clearing, path repairs and timber bridge replacements. Another £678,725 went to Cottage Wood for invasive species removal, road resurfacing and new signage.
Funding for Ronán's Way was pulled because the council does not own the land. Officials worried this would delay completion within the funding period.
McKillop expressed disappointment over Ronán's Way despite support for the other sites. She asked for the matter to return to the council's project board for detailed discussion.
The councillor stated the landowner and council had progressed a lease for the Land and Property Subcommittee. She said the lease failed to reach that stage for unknown reasons and called for an explanation out of respect for the landowner.
