Craigavon Footbridges Closed Over Structural Safety Fears
The Department for Infrastructure closed the Maple Path and Parkmore footbridges in Craigavon on Thursday, June 4, after detailed engineering inspections revealed structural issues. The department said the closures were necessary while a permanent solution is developed.
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart said many residents had contacted her about the closures, which she acknowledged would disrupt daily life. She said the bridges provide key links across the area and help people access amenities. Public safety must come first, she added, but she urged the department to explore temporary measures to minimise disruption.
Lockhart said she had been assured that temporary options including alternative crossings, underpasses and other linkages were being considered. She asked for residents’ views on what would help most and stressed that the department must present clear plans and timescales, as a permanent fix could take time.
Sinn Féin councillors Catherine Nelson and Jude Mallon expressed deep concern about the impact on residents, workers, families, cyclists and pedestrians who use the bridges daily. They noted the bridges are part of Craigavon’s network of pathways and important for connecting communities safely. They said they had secured a briefing with departmental officials to seek clarity on options and timescales.
Alliance Upper Bann MLA Eóin Tennyson described the closure as a shock and frustration, saying the bridges are well-used and vital for active travel and access to Craigavon Lakes. He contrasted the situation with the recent erection of a new footbridge at Moylinn after its own unplanned closure, and said his party would seek urgent answers from the Minister for Infrastructure.
