Mayor praises exhibition on mother-and-baby homes
A new exhibition featuring creative works by survivors of mother-and-baby homes, Magdalene laundries and workhouses opened at the Guildhall in Derry.
The display, titled Unredacted: The Artist’s Book as Alternative Testimony, includes artist books, photographs, news articles and personal artefacts created by birth mothers and adult adoptees from the Derry area.
Mayor Ruairí McHugh attended the opening and praised the project for providing survivors with a creative outlet and raising awareness of the truth recovery process.
He noted Derry’s direct connection to the history, including St Mary’s Waterside Magdalene Laundry and Bayview private nursing home.
The mayor said the exhibition recognises the impact of cross-border movement of mothers and babies and allows voices long silenced to be heard.
The project was developed following meetings between the mayor and Professor Marie Breen Smyth and Danny Taggart from the University of Essex.
The exhibition runs until 27 May 2026.
