Minister presses for end to RTÉ geoblocking in Northern Ireland
Stormont Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has called on RTÉ to take steps to end geoblocking of its programmes for viewers in Northern Ireland.
The minister said licensing rules currently prevent access to some programmes and sporting events, causing frustration for people who switch to the channel and find content blocked.
Archibald stated that she has raised the issue with both the British and Irish governments, following similar action by her predecessor Conor Murphy.
She said the power to change licensing rules lies with the Irish government and Westminster, and noted that a bill has been introduced in the Dáil to place responsibility on RTÉ to make content available across the island.
Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney welcomed the minister's engagement with both governments and said the Irish government has the responsibility to address the issue with regulators and broadcasters.
The South Antrim MLA described the current blocking of RTÉ content as unacceptable and called for further action to secure access for viewers in Northern Ireland.
