Belfast City Council Opens Dog Exercise Zone in Ormeau Park
Belfast City Council has opened a dedicated dog exercise zone in Ormeau Park. The facility sits near the Ozone Complex and Indoor Tennis Centre. It features seating, a water supply, and two enclosed areas for small and large dogs. Some play equipment comes from repurposed retired playground gear.
Funding came from the Concert Social Levy scheme. That program directs part of the revenue from major events in city parks back into community projects.
The opening pairs with a council initiative to encourage responsible dog ownership. Authorities have stepped up dog warden patrols in areas flagged by residents as problem spots.
Councillor Fred Cobain, who chairs the People and Communities Committee, noted that most owners act responsibly but some fail to pick up waste. The council deploys daily cleansing teams and education efforts citywide. Cleansing vehicles in North Belfast now carry messages about dog fouling. Operatives wear badges offering free waste bags to walkers.
Failing to remove dog waste counts as an offence. Fixed penalty notices start at 80 pounds, dropping to 50 pounds if paid within 10 days. Court fines can reach 1,000 pounds. Waste may go in public litter bins or household black bins.
A survey on dog fouling and further steps closed on 2 March. Residents can report issues through the council website to guide patrols and cleaning.
