Public Inquiry into Pat Finucane Murder to Open with Procedural Hearing
A procedural hearing for the public inquiry into the 1989 murder of solicitor Pat Finucane will take place in Belfast on June 10.
Pat Finucane was shot dead by a UDA gang in his North Belfast home on February 12, 1989. His wife Geraldine was wounded in the attack.
The British government announced the inquiry in 2024 after decades of campaigning by the Finucane family. The Terms of Reference were published in March.
The inquiry will examine the circumstances of the murder, identify those involved, assess whether the killing could have been prevented, and review relevant acts or omissions.
Previous official reports have concluded there was collusion between loyalists and the British state in the murder. Former British Prime Minister David Cameron apologised on behalf of the government.
Sinn Féin MLA Deirdre Hargey said the start of the inquiry is a testament to the Finucane family's strength and courage after 37 years of campaigning.
Hargey expressed support for the family during what she described as a difficult period ahead.
