People living with dementia in Belfast are taking part in shared reading groups run by Dementia NI.

Paul McCooey, a participant from Belfast, said the sessions allow him to continue reading despite memory difficulties. He described the group as a place to discuss problems and exchange ideas with others.

Research from Queen's University Belfast and Dementia NI found the groups provide enjoyment, better social engagement, and improved mood.

Dr Jane Lugea of Queen's University Belfast said adjustments make reading possible for people with dementia and that social settings add further benefits.

The groups use short fiction and poetry. Participants read aloud and discuss the material.

Dementia NI has established several groups in Northern Ireland. Libraries have also begun running similar sessions.

Organisers have created a resource pack to help other groups start shared reading activities.
