Circus Group Launches Report on Benefits for Over-55s in Derry
In Your Space Circus launched a research report titled 'Clowning, Connection and Confidence at 55 Plus' at The Glassworks in Derry on Thursday.
The report examines the Silver Circus programme, which offers circus activities such as juggling, movement exercises and magic tricks to adults aged over 55 in the North West.
Author Cassie Riggs wrote the report with input from Dr Nick McCaffery and Colette Ramsey. Participants reported reduced stress, higher confidence, less loneliness, better mobility, improved concentration and stronger social ties from the workshops.
The Ideas Fund provided funding for the project, with support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
Cath McBride, company director, stated that playfulness supports confidence, connection and wellbeing in later life. She added that the research underscores the value of inclusive creative methods for healthier and more connected lives.
Jill Cornforth, Grants Manager at the Ideas Fund, noted that the project demonstrates outcomes from community and research collaboration.
Patricia Lavery, Head of Community Arts and Education at the Arts Council, said the arts assist older people in gaining voice, fostering social bonds and enhancing physical and mental health amid an ageing population.
