West Belfast Older People Project Creates Public Art Installation
Older people in West Belfast participate in a community project called A Tapestry of Time. The initiative uses visual arts, textiles, poetry, photography, movement and soundscapes to produce a public art installation. The installation will appear at Black Mountain Shared Space in West Belfast.
Sandy Cuthbert, a dance and somatic practitioner, leads the project with professional artists from Off The Rails Dance. Participants meet every Thursday at Black Mountain Shared Space. Sessions start with somatic movement practice led by Cuthbert.
The Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s National Lottery Arts and Older People Programme funds the project. The programme began in 2010 as a partnership with the Public Health Agency. It has allocated over £2 million to community organisations across Northern Ireland for 272 arts projects aimed at older people.
A Tapestry of Time follows Seeds of Wisdom, another Off The Rails Dance project funded by the same programme. Seeds of Wisdom involved intergenerational learning through gardening and textiles.
Lorraine Calderwood, Programmes Officer at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, noted the programme's role in supporting arts engagement for older people.
